3 Powerful Uses For Castor Oil
The use of castor oil has been around for thousands of years, and is one of the more well known Ayurvedic detoxification practices.
What is caster oil?
Castor oil comes from seeds of the ricinus communis plant, which is native to tropical areas of Africa and Asia. It is produced by crushing the seeds of the castor oil plant. Many of the benefits gained by using castor oil are a result of its chemical composition, mainly ricinoleic acid.
Riconoleic acid helps the liver to break down hormones and toxins, increases blood flow to organs, and nourishes the skin.
Uses for caster oil:
Hormone balancing: As I mentioned in my last post, detoxifying and cleansing the liver is a huge part of balancing hormones. Caster oil is a big part of that process. Caster oil increases circulation to the organ it is placed on. Circulation aids in healing, recovery and reduction in inflammation (aka circulation is a really good thing!). When you use caster oil over the liver, the oil gets into the cells of the liver and surrounding lymphatic system to help the body effectively remove the toxins that lead to hormone imbalance.
Increase circulation: Circulation brings vital nutrients to every organ of the body. This is especially important if one organ in particular has been hit hard (like the liver- not literally, but metaphorically). Increasing circulation to the liver allows for all the normal healthy detoxification processes to happen naturally. It begins eliminating those toxins through the liver and gut instead of dumping them into the blood stream or reproductive organs.
Skin support: The skin is naturally benefitted by applying caster oil over the liver, because when your liver is detoxifying properly, you are no longer detoxifying through your skin (breakouts, itching, etc). But, you can also apply it topically as a moisturizer for added skin benefits. Many people do notice that you detox through your skin for a bit when applying topically, but after that there is a noticeable improvement.
How to apply:
Castor oil pack: Saturate a flannel cloth in castor oil, place over your liver (take your right hand and place it just under the right side of your rib cage- that's where your liver is) and then apply a heating pad (I use a rice pack). Lay and rest for about 30-45 minutes. It is recommended to do this nightly but if I'm honest, I'm lucky to do this once a week.
If you find that doing the caster oil "pack" method is too time consuming, you can opt to use the caster oil roll-on, and simply roll it over your liver instead.
I use caster oil daily and notice a huge shift in my hormones, energy and sleep when I am consistent with this!
