Himalayan Salt Lamp Benefits

Ive been doing some research on indoor air pollution, and was surprised to find that the quality of the air inside our homes is worse than that outside our homes. From indoor furnishings, floors, plastics, and poor air movement through ducts, to synthetic fragrances, it can be hard to completely eliminate toxins we are exposed to in our homes without doing a complete overhaul.

The air we breathe affects not just our lungs and airways, but our skin, sleep, hormones, etc! Unfortunately, our sense of smell is not always accurate when it comes to detecting the quality of the air we are breathing due to the size of the molecules.

The EPA states that "In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities. Other research indicates that people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. Thus, for many people, the risks to health may be greater due to exposure to air pollution indoors than outdoors."

I've been looking into affordable ways to improve the air quality in our home without breaking the bank. I am TERRIBLE at keeping plants alive, so that's out. I've been hearing about salt lamps, but haven't delved too much into it until recently. Here's what I found about the benefits of the Himalayan Salt lamp:

  • Salt attracts water to itself, thereby attracting water molecules that have toxins (bacteria and viruses, mold etc)attached to it and absorbs them into itself.

  • The heat from the light dries out the molecules, while the salt acts as an antibacterial and antiviral, trapping the contaminants into the salt.

  • Once it traps the contaminants, the water molecules are released back into the air- but have been purified.

  • Himalayan Salt Lamps reduce airborne electromagnetic radiation. Things like our microwave, WIFI, cell phone, computer and television all emit electromagnetic radiation. Over time and with continual exposure, this can lead to feeling fatigued, over-stimulated, insomnia and in severe cases lead to things like cancer.

  • Salt lamps have also been shown to reduce asthma and allergy symptoms.

  • Because of their reduction of electromagnetic radiation, you should also expect to notice an improvement in sleep and stress levels.

This all sounds like a great, affordable solution to help provide improvement to the air quality issue many of us have in our homes! No need to spend hundreds of dollars, and the salt seems to recycle itself so that you won't need to replace it like you would an air filter.

Some things to keep in mind as far as telling if you have a quality lamp include:

  • It should be from Pakistan, as genuine Himalayan salt is mined from the Himalayas. Somewhere on your packaging should indicate its country of origin.

  • The Salt rock should sweat- it absorbs water, and the heat from the lamp should cause a little bit of sweating- especially in humid weather.

  • It chips or breaks- similar to a salt rock. The salt lamps are hard yet brittle, as they should be. It will withstand normal movement and care, but if it is bumped firmly it may crack.

  • It should give off uneven light, due to the uneven nature of the salt rock.

  • And last but certainly not least, you should start to feel the benefits of the rock over time.

This is a salt lamp similar to the one we have. I'm excited to add this salt lamp in addition to using our diffuser to help purify the air, especially for the winter months where the air tends to be more damp and it is difficult to keep air circulating.

What benefits are you most hoping to improve? I'd love to hear!

To your wellness,

Andrea Jones
