Signs You Might Be Under the Influence of Fear

Does fear dominate your thought life?

Fear used to be such an all encompassing part of my life that it felt like it was part of me.

My mother, grandmother, father and aunt all struggled with debilitating anxiety, so all that had been modeled for me was how to respond to situations in fear and lack.

Worst case scenarios and what if's filled my mind on a daily basis.

What if my mom forgets to pick me up from school?

What if my dad doesn't get a job this month? How will we have enough to eat?

What if what if what if.

It never stopped.

It didn't matter how much I prayed or how much I "surrendered"... The thoughts didn't stop.

Now, I want to give a disclaimer here- there are very real and valid reasons why someone can struggle with fear physiologically (this will be a topic for another post)- but that's not what I'm talking about here.

I don't know how else to explain it other than it was like being followed around by a really mean negative person all the time- except that person was in my head.

I was diagnosed with Obsessive compulsive Disorder (OCD) at the age of 13 and the obsessions were so debilitating that I almost ended my life. And while medication did help to get me balanced, the sense of forboding never left me.

That's because there was a spiritual element that needed to be addressed in order for me to be totally free.

2 Timothy 1:7 "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."

The word is clear that fear doesn't come from God- yet it is a normal human emotion that we all feel from time to time.

But it is also a spiritual force that tries to gain access to our lives throug circumstances and people.

Ephesians 6 says that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers of this dark world- these are spiritual forces of wickedness that are operating in rebellion and should not be tolerated.

Here are some signs you might be dealing with the spirit of fear:

  • Constantly expecting the worst to happen- feeling like you're always bracing yourself for another shoe to drop

  • Restless sleep, insomnia and nightmares

  • Feeling a sense of foreboding- always dreading the worst

  • Constantly tense shoulders, neck or clenched jaw

  • Headaches

If you're experiencing these symptoms and you've done everything in the natural to address them, then it's time to look into potential spiritual causes.
